Upside Down Smiles

What makes a day bad?

Does it have to be something cataclysmic like a destructive tornado or life altering like a car accident? Or can it possibly be finding out the last banana in the bunch is covered in brown spots? I don't wake up on certain mornings with a conviction to get upset over everything and see the bad side of it. I like to think I'm a pretty positive person; bad days tend to sneak up on me.

I contest that what makes a normal day bad is usually the accumulation of things that have happened over the past few days.

Working for 9 hours and missing time with friends. Falling asleep and missing the time when you were supposed to be talking to one of your best friends. Having bizarre stomach pain that stops you from going to church one Sunday. Getting a letter from someone you miss very much. Reading a book so poetic and heartbreaking that it hurts to read. Not getting a text back from someone. Driving to your favorite burrito restaurant downtown to find it closed down. Realizing how hard it can be to grow up and leave home. Messing up an order at work during a rush that stresses out you and your coworker and also costs the business money.

Not all of these are bad individually. Some of them are actually great. But together, they equal one bad day.

But you know what the best part is about a bad day? You get to go to sleep and wake up to a great day.

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense. -Emerson

So, we are officially pirates and in the same boat (I call being Captain Jack Sparrow). It's crazy how much this resembles my life, especially the reading part...and the work part...and the growing up part. Not only that, but we both used Emerson quotes in our last post. Coincidence? I think not.

Despite the little things that bring you down, there are little things that bring you back up, like listening to a conference talk. Or finally getting to sleep in. Or even getting slightly tanner instead of crispy and red. I think what constitutes a bad day is thinking that all the little bad things outweigh all the little good things. :)
